The real purpose of this podcast is to put students in the mindset of a historian looking back in time in order to be able to connect the traditions of the past to the workings of today. This way students can accurately piece together how the past connnects to the present and will connect to the future. For this assignment I had my students create a podcast of a monologue from a Shakespeare play that we would be reading in class. While creating the podcast, I asked them to concentrate on their voice, and how the emotion behind their voice can be used to bring the scene to life for their readers. By using a podcast instead of performing the monologue in front of class, students are forced to truly use their voice as a tool, which is especially useful when studying drama. This assignment was designed for a ninth or tenth grade English class.

Assignment: Students are to place themselves into the shoes of American Revolutionaries - but with a contemporary twist. They are to make a 'declaration' of their own concerning a club or activity that they are currently involved in. They are then to comment on how their declaration relates to the actual Declaration of Independence.

This assignment is for an 8th grade English class. It requires students to read two cinquain poems out loud with the feeling and emotion that they want to convey to their audience. Afterwards I would ask them to talk about what aspects of each of their poems they found to be strong, as well as which aspects they think might need improving. Besides giving them a new sense of pride in their work, the podcast requires them to put thought into how they want it read to an audience. It also gives students an opportunity to think out loud and discuss how they would improve their poetry.
